Google‘s NotebookLM Unveils New Audio Conversations Feature

On Wednesday, Google revealed an exciting update for its AI-driven note-taking and research application, NotebookLM: the introduction of a new “audio conversations” feature. This innovative addition allows users another method to absorb and understand the content of their uploaded documents, which may include anything from course readings to legal briefs.

Previously, NotebookLM focused on providing textual summaries and clarifications of source material. Now, this functionality extends to audio, catering especially to those who prefer auditory explanations over traditional reading.

With the new feature, AI-generated virtual hosts will utilize conversational speech patterns to summarize your shared materials. These hosts aim to present facts and interesting topics from your documents while employing metaphors to clarify complex ideas. According to Google, tuning into these audio discussions can foster new connections between documents and spark inspiration for writing projects.

To engage with audio conversations, simply open an existing notebook, access the Notebook guide, and click the “generate” button located on the right. Expect a processing time of up to five minutes for each audio conversation, which is currently limited to English language generation.

The option to download these audio conversations is also available, enabling users to listen on the go and easily grasp the essence of their source materials.

While the feature is still in beta, Google cautions users that there may be occasional inaccuracies in the audio narratives.

NotebookLM first made its appearance under the name Project Tailwind during the Google I/O event in June 2023. Following its launch, the app became accessible to individuals over the age of 18 in the U.S. last December and now operates in more than 200 countries, supporting over 108 languages.
