In a much-anticipated update, X, the social platform owned by Elon Musk, has finally unveiled a coveted feature for direct messaging: the option to edit sent messages.
Over the weekend, X rolled out this editing capability exclusively for iOS users. An engineer from the company shared a post regarding this rollout, indicating that more platforms will receive the message editing function shortly.
“Save yourself from your own bad decisions (or typos) (or both). DM edits are here. You’re welcome,” the X team tweeted.
To utilize this new feature, follow these steps:
- Open any direct message chat within the X application on your iOS device.
- Long press on any message you’ve sent or tap on the three-dot menu next to the message.
- Select the “Edit message” option to change the previously sent text.
A support page confirms that there is no time restriction for editing messages. Users can also modify older direct messages; however, a cap of five edits per message is enforced, similar to the limit applied for editing posts.
While X maintains a log of edited messages for security, it currently does not provide a visible version history of these modifications.
Users have long anticipated this editing capability, as several other messaging applications, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Messenger, already offer similar functions. Additionally, Apple introduced the ability to edit messages sent via iMessage with the launch of iOS 16.
