In a world where digital presence has become ubiquitous, a major concern has emerged regarding the safety of children on the internet. High-profile social media platforms are under intense scrutiny, leading them to develop tools aimed at safeguarding young users. The heart of the matter lies in ensuring the content accessible to kids remains secure.
While numerous platforms target teenagers, there exists a gap for younger audiences like toddlers who also interact with digital devices. A trio of innovators, with experience from Google and Amazon, have embarked on creating Hello Wonder, an AI-driven browser that promises a safer digital environment for children. This platform allows youngsters to engage in learning and exploration without the risks that currently plague the internet.
The application, tailored for iPads, places control squarely in the hands of parents, enabling them to filter content through an AI chatbot. This virtual companion provides answers, videos, and interactive content deemed safe for children’s consumption. The team behind Hello Wonder argues that existing solutions, such as YouTube Kids, prioritize user engagement over genuine safety and fail to offer adequate parental insight into their child’s digital consumption.
To address these concerns, Hello Wonder has successfully garnered $2.1 million in funding from notable investors including the Designer Fund, A16Z Scout Fund, GroundUp Ventures, and Chasing Rainbows, alongside contributions from individual investors deeply rooted in kids’ content creation.
Founders Seth Raphael, Brian Backus, and Daniel Shiplacoff bring a wealth of experience from their previous roles at leading tech companies. Their mission was inspired by Raphael’s personal challenge of finding suitable digital content for his five children during the pandemic. His vision for Hello Wonder is to harness AI’s potential in making the internet a safe and beneficial space for kids, guided by principles from the Montessori educational method.
Parents have extensive controls over the type of content their children are exposed to, from videos and games to educational material, and can customize notifications on their kids’ activity. For families focusing on specific learning goals, such as mastering a musical instrument, the app’s AI can curate and incorporate relevant content into the child’s learning journey.
Hello Wonder isn’t just about consumption; it also supports interactive learning and communication, allowing kids to safely connect with approved family members through the app.
Jordan Odinsky from GroundUp Ventures highlights that Hello Wonder differentiates itself by offering a comprehensive internet experience under the vigilant eye of AI to ensure content safety, adapting as the child grows.
