Midjourney, the renowned AI image-generating platform boasting over $200 million in revenue and free from venture capital influence, is taking a significant leap into the hardware sector.
The groundbreaking announcement came through a post on X, the social media platform, on Wednesday. The company disclosed that its new hardware division will set its roots in San Francisco.
We’re officially branching into the hardware landscape. If you’re captivated by the prospect of being part of our pioneering team in San Francisco, reach out to us at hardware@midjourney.com— Midjourney (@midjourney)
The intrigue surrounds what kind of hardware the relatively young Midjourney, with fewer than 100 team members, is aiming to develop. A significant hint may lie in the company’s recent recruitment of Ahmad Abbas, an ex-Neuralink staff member. Over the last five years, Abbas played a crucial role in engineering the Apple Vision Pro, Apple’s venture into the mixed reality headset market, serving most recently as the hardware engineering manager.
David Holz, Midjourney’s CEO, brings his own esteemed background in hardware to the forefront. Holz co-established Leap Motion, noted for its motion tracking technology; intriguingly enough, Abbas and Holz collaborated at Leap Motion.
Amid ongoing legal challenges concerning its AI training methodologies, Midjourney remains committed to advancing its AI model developments for both video and 3D generation. These hardware endeavours could very well complement their existing AI capabilities, further integrating into the fabric of next-generation technology.
